In the year 2000, I was able to transfer 36 bytes per second between two locations on personally held mediums. In 2005, it increased to 3106bps, on 21-Nov-200 to 12000bps, and on 1st Apr 2009 to 198000bps. Plotting this on a graph (the points in red, and an approximate exponential curve in black):
