Of Anthems…

Anthem for the Universe
Anthem for the Universe

Its a commonly held misnomer that the Indian National Anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana‘ was written by Tagore in praise of George V. Tagore who had the guts to refuse knighthood, would not write in praise of any George.

The anthem was written as Ode to God – intentionally to let the British think its in praise of King George V. This is a common route that poets take against to mock the establishment.

Tagore was a well read person. He was once asked what he would write as the anthem for the universe. Tagore replied that that had already been written by Guru Nanak. He was referring to the following:

Think of the sky as a plate, the sun and the moon are the lamps. The stars and their orbs are the studded pearls.
The fragrance of sandalwood in the air is the temple incense, and the wind is the fan. All the plants of the world are the altar flowers in offering to You, O Luminous Lord. ||1||
What a beautiful worship service this is!
O Destroyer of Fear this worship is worthy of You.
The Unstruck Sound-current of the Shabad is the vibration of the temple drums. ||1||Pause||
You have thousands of eyes, and yet You have no eyes. You have thousands of forms, and yet You do not have even one.
You have thousands of Lotus Feet, and yet You do not have even one foot. You have no nose, but you have thousands of noses. This Play of Yours entrances me. ||2||
Amongst all is the Light-You are the source of that Light.
By this Illumination, that Light is radiant within all.
Through the Guru’s Teachings, the Light of knowledge shines forth.
That which is pleasing to Him is the lamp-lit worship service. ||3||
My mind is enticed by the honey-sweet Lotus Feet of the Lord. Day and night, I thirst for them.
Bestow the Water of Your Mercy upon Nanak, the thirsty song-bird, so that he may come to dwell in Your Name. ||4||3||

Guru Nanak penned this when he reached Jagannath Puri (in 1510 AD), and watched the Arti (worship service) and noted its futility. He preached that God is omnipresent, his scent in everything and in every being – not housed in a small temple with destructible idols and extinguishable lamp.

Third Pauri (Step 3)

Moving ahead in the series of gurbani (the word of the Guru) wallpapers, below is the third pauri (third step).

The narrative to this step states that thoughts about God form a “rainbow of colors blending in white”. This can be applied to entire Japuji Sahib as well: there are so many different explanations, none of which can be labeled correct or incorrect. Each has its own bliss to read and know.

Enjoy, below in four parts:

Sikhism – story so far

Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Harimandir Sahib

Over the past one and a half years that this blog has been active, I have written more than 15 posts about Sikhism, a religious movement brought about by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Sikhs believe in One Immortal Being, and none other.

Guru Nanak was once asked who is better: Hindu or Muslim. His answer was that if good deeds are not the way of life, both Hindu and Muslims will spend their life crying. Religion is like the saffron fruit: the color washes away easily. Your deeds are what will stay with you.

Sikhism has love for the Creation and for the Creator as a central tenet. If you do not have a heart filled with love for everyone (and not just your family), you will not be able to meet God – because he doesn’t speak Sanskrit, Arabic or Pali:

God speaks the language of Love

And:

I speak the Truth, please understand: those who will Love the Creation, only those will be successful in finding God.

The following are some of the more popular posts, and I recommend reading them in the given sequence:

Guru

Today is being celebrated as the day the first guru of Sikhs, Guru Nanak spread the light of His knowledge. Guru Nanak taught us to abide by the threefold principles of:

  1. kirt karo – Making an honest living through hardwork
  2. naam japo – remembering God at all times
  3. vand chako – sharing with others in need

He also taught us, through the Japuji Sahib (one of the writings) what God is, and how to worship him.

The importance of a Guru can’t be stated: there is no way to seek God without the Guru. Guru Nanak was the first one to show the divine path.

Some thoughts about the importance of the Guru:

Worship the One Divine Lord. Service to the Guru is the real bath (compared to bathing at religious places). (Pause)

There is no deity equal to the Guru. Whoever has good destiny inscribed on his forehead, applies himself to selfless service. (Pause)

I am forever a sacrifice to the True Guru. He has shown me the path.

If a hundred moons were to rise, and a thousand suns appeared,
even with such light, there would still be pitch darkness without the Guru (because the path of righteousness would not be visible).

The image below shows Guru Nanak resting, and a cobra providing the Guru shade from the sun. Rai Bular (the person standing on the side) is amazed to see this.

Religion = Science

Guru Nanak Dev Ji

There are many groups of people which claim that there is a disconnect between science and religion. I do not however see any disconnect – I will start from a scientist’s point of view.
Scientist

Albert Einstein did not believe in God. However, attributing to quantum mechanics he did say “God does not play dice.” He was refuting the quantum theory (which is based on chance). We can “normalize” that to mean that even if God exists, He is not actively involved in running the world (does not interfere with what is happening according to His laws). The same thought is expressed by the tenth Guru in Jaap Sahib: aalisiay karm, aadirsay dharam which means “O Lord, You do not need to make any special efforts to do what You want to do”.

Science has made much advances, and will continue to do so. However, its a challenge as of today to define exactly when the universe was created: scientists believe that its impossible to find out what existed or happened before the big bang. Also, its not known how the universe will end: depending on the total mass of the universe, one of the following three things will happen:

  1. The universe will continue to expand for ever, like it does today
  2. The universe will, at a certain time, stop expanding and start contracting
  3. The universe will continue to expand and contract as in the above two options, but infinitely for ever

Which one of these will actually happen can be predicted if we knew the total mass of the universe, however – we currently don’t.

Exact same thoughts are echoed by the Guru:

  1. About never being able to find out when the universe was created:

Neither the yogi nor any one else knows the lunar day, week day season and the month. The Creator who creates the world, He Himself Knows (the time).

  2. About never being able to find out the total mass of universe:

How much the Creator has Created, who can know?

  3. About the fact that the universe has been created many times (each time a new expansion after the previous contraction):

Many times, the universe has expanded by Him.

I also find it more than a coincidence that while scientists call the moment of creation big-bang (having to do with sound), the Guru has the following to say:

You created the vast expanse of the Universe with One Word

which has also to do with the uttering of a sound.

Another similar thought from the Adi Granth:

The limits of Your creation cannot be known, nor how in the beginning You created the Universes.

Update Dec 30th 2009: I recollected another thought this morning:

First, there is life in the water, by which everything else is made green

Darwin’s theory was not promulgated until 1858, which agrees: life started in the sea.

Update from 8th Nov 2012: Perhaps I have missed one of the most important facts. Scientifically, for around 1 billion years after formation – the universe was filled with gases (Hydrogen and Helium). The Guru echoes the same:

For endless eons, the universe was only dark gases.

Update from 14th July 2015: This page is probably the most revisited post of this blog. Another evidence:

Sācẖe ṯe pavnā bẖaiā pavnai ṯe jal hoye.
From the True Lord originated the air, and from the air came water.

Jal ṯe ṯaribẖavaṇ sājiā gẖat gẖat joṯ samoe.
From water, He created the three worlds; in each and every heart He has infused His Light.

In 1780s, Cavendish found that water is made of Hydrogen and Oxygen, both constituents of air. Guru Nanak wrote this verse above prior to the year 1539.

Karwa Chauth

The festival of Karwa Chauth is being celebrated today – females keep fast for the well being of the husband. Like many other brahminical practices, this has also entered Sikhism.

The creator created food to nourish the body. It does not please Him for us to forsake food – remember, an empty stomach cannot remember Him with full devotion.

This is what Sri Guru Granth Sahib offers about fasting:

Fasting, daily rituals, and austere self-discipline – those who keep the practice of these, are rewarded with less than a shell.

Hereafter, the way is different, O Siblings of Destiny. There, these things are of no use at all. ||1||

Kabir is quite strict:

Kabeer, the woman who gives up meditation on the Lord, and observes the ritual fast of Ahoi,

shall be reincarnated as a donkey, to carry heavy burdens. ||108||

Ahoi is also a fasting based ritual. Some people need a punishment, it seems. Many people will argue that fasting is good for the body, which is why they are doing it. My question: why then do it on a specific day? They should do it on another day just to prove they are doing it only for the body and not for any other reason.

I want to use the occasion to also share another verse:

Pauree:

No one can bring You under control, by despising the world.

No one can bring You under control, by studying the Vedas.

No one can bring You under control, by bathing at the holy places.

No one can bring You under control, by wandering all over the world.

No one can bring You under control, by any clever tricks.

No one can bring You under control, by giving huge donations to charities.

Everyone is under Your power, O inaccessible, unfathomable Lord.

You are under the control of Your devotees; You are the strength of Your devotees. ||10||

Coffee table religion

Coffee table
Coffee table

I think I have just coined a new term. I was pondering on this for the last 2-3 days but the term wasn’t taking shape – this morning it dawned on me all of a sudden. I didn’t find anything googling for this term, although the term ‘Coffee table Buddhism’ did turn up.

Coffee table religion is simplified, ready-to-use religion which is home delivered to you. It has a list of simple tasks that you can carry out, feel good about having done something positive and talk about it over coffee.

Consider as an example charity. Charity is good if you loose your desire to resort to foul means to get something: if I donate $1 today, I will not steal someone’s $1 tomorrow. However, charity is bad if it becomes just a way to increase your ego. I have talked about this in my podcast.

Almost all the tenets of coffee table religion is just a way to boost ego. To meet the Lord, we need to obtain the path from the Guru: waking up early and following the rules of the Creation. The ultimate aim of true religion is to inculcate a love for the Creator within yourself. So far as that does not happen, there is no reason to boost your ego.

First Pauri (Step 1)

To continue the series of Japuji Sahib wallpapers, I present the First Pauri (Japji Sahib) below. Japji Sahib shows us the way to uplift yourself from falsehood to Truth in 38 steps.

In the first lines of this Pauri ‘soch’ refers to the sanskrit work ‘shauch’ which means ‘to cleanse’.

There are two wallpapers of the same size as earlier, having the Pauri in two parts (click to enlarge):
